My name is Susan and I live in Highbury New Park, Islington. I moved to London to be with my partner. I grew up in Essex and always had animals around the house from being very young. My first memory of owning a pet was my Rabbit Bugsy, he was a wonderful very large Black and White Rabbit, and he was very clever and would follow me around the garden and play ball with me! I’ll never forget him he was a lovely Rabbit. We bred and owned lots of Rabbits over the years.
I also owned a Yellow and White Cockatiel called Chalky, he was a healthy 21 years old when he passed away! He was a colourful character and a real chatter box! I’ve also owned Budgerigars, Canaries and goldfish, one of which was named Bob which lived to a grand old age and turned a nice shade of Silver due to his old age!
When I was little I used to love trips to my Aunt & Uncles farm in Durham during the Spring Lambing season, I was lucky enough to bottle feed the new lambs when they arrived! They reminded me so much of puppies! Great memories.
I’ve always been very sensitive to animal issues which gave me the nickname Dr Doolittle by my family and friends! When I was younger I used to rescue and look after birds that fell out of their nests, one of which I managed to reintroduce to the wild successfully! I also cared for a a fox cub that had been abandoned by her own mother which also proved to be a success story!
My fondest memory is of my beloved Border Collie Rags, who passed away in 2002. Rags had a great sense of humour! He was quite popular where I lived for being so comical and quite true to his breed. I still mourn him to this very day and don’t think I’ll ever stop missing him. I’m
left with some fantastic memories of him. I’m sure anybody that has been in this position will know how this feels to lose a dog. Dogs are such amazing and intelligent animals that they really do serve the great purpose of being part of the family. They are such loyal and trusted companions.
It is in Rag’s memory that I have chosen to give up my office job to follow my dream of working with animals. I now run my very own professional, reliable and caring pet care service in London.
For years I’ve been an avid supporter of the WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals) the PDSA
(The People's Dispensary for Sick Animals) the RSPCA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals)
and Naturewatch.
